SPOTLIGHT:
JACOB HASHIMOTO
For Olympia’s lobby, artist Jacob Hashimoto was commissioned to create a large-scale site-specific installation that would anchor the intersection of Front and Water Streets with an artistic feat. Inspired by the waterfront milieu and DUMBO community, Jacob's sculpture contemplates water and greenery, as well as Olympia's use of natural materials. Visible to the public, the "floating" piece invites viewers and residents alike to admire, interact with, and interpret the artwork and its context—which, for many, will resemble sunlight breaking through a cloud.
Using sculpture, painting, and installation, Jacob Hashimoto creates complex worlds from a range of modular components: bamboo-and-paper kites, model boats, even astroturf-covered blocks. His accretive, layered compositions reference video games, virtual environments, and cosmology, while also remaining deeply rooted in art-historical traditions — landscape-based abstraction, modernism, and handcraft, most notably.
For Olympia’s lobby, artist Jacob Hashimoto was commissioned to create a large scale site-specific installation that would anchor the intersection of Front & Water Street as a window to a stunning display of art. Inspired by the waterfront community of DUMBO, Jacob’s lobby sculpture plays on the surrounding water, greenery and the building’s natural materials.
Visible from the street, the sculpture will invite viewers and residents alike to admire from afar and below, interacting with the piece in it’s physical environment. The “floating” piece resembles a storm at sea, or light shining through a cloud.
